This breakfast sandwich is everything you love about a McMuffin, but it is better because it has grilled onions.
This week, I took a stab at making English muffins for the first time. They turned out pretty good on the first try, but I’m not ready to share my recipe just yet, I need to do more research (I know, annoying). So, for now, store-bought English muffins will do the trick. For this recipe, it’s simple really, we are just going to fry some eggs, pan fry our sausage patties, grill some onions, make our McDonald’s breakfast sauce, and put all that on our English muffins, so simple. So let’s make them!
Recipe
Ingredients
1 lb Italian pork sausage (I used Whole Foods Mild Italian)
1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
2 Tbsp butter (for grilling onions)
5 English muffins
5 fried eggs
McDonald’s Copycat Sauce
½ cup heavy-duty mayo (Kewpie is my top pick)
2 Tbsp mustard
2 tsp ketchup
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp lemon juice
¼ tsp dill
¼ tsp salt
Black pepper to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, mix together:
½ cup mayo
2 Tbsp mustard
2 tsp ketchup
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp lemon juice
¼ tsp dill
¼ tsp salt
Black pepper to taste
Let the sauce chill in the fridge for at least an hour.
Step 2: Cook the Sausage Patties
Divide the sausage into 10 small patties.
Heat oil in a medium pan over medium heat.
Cook the patties in batches, about 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and fully cooked. Set aside.
Step 3: Grill the Onions
Heat 2 Tbsp butter in a small pan over medium heat.
Add the thinly sliced onions and stir frequently to prevent burning.
Cook until they’re golden brown or slightly charred, depending on your preference.
Step 4: Fry the Eggs
Use the same pan you cooked the sausage or onions in. Melt a little butter and fry the eggs to your desired doneness.
Step 5: Assemble the Sandwich
Split each English muffin in half.
Layer on two sausage patties, grilled onions, and a fried egg.
Then top with the other half.
Meal Prep Tips
Wrap each sandwich in parchment paper and store them in the fridge for 3–5 days.
To reheat, microwave in 30-second intervals (about 1 minute total). Add the sauce after heating.
